the small lady who is big time

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

This week is finals week. Exams, exams and exams… luckily, yesterday was my last exam.

In our school, De Lasalle University - Manila, everything you’ll see would be green and white. From the entrance gate(s), to the buildings, hallways and benches, all with the touch of green. Students were always found in those benches at any given time. There are Koreans, Taiwanese, Chinese, Japanese, Australians, Americans, Canadians, Germans, Indonesians and of course Filipinos (incomplete list of nationality of students). Personnels would be wearing green polo shirts and others would wear blue. Professors would be those formal people with cases or bags that I think their paper works would be. There are Men wearing polo barongs that at first look, bankers… but not, they are the Disciplinary Officers lead by "Mang Jack" whom almost all students aliased "Werewolf".  But those aren’t interesting at all, for these are an everyday view.

So I thought that "why not write about someone or something that would catch my interest there?" and so I found her… an old small lady who is a big time administrator in school. I dont know her name, but I know that she is not one of those popular admin there. Let us just call her "Madam". Madam is so small, literaly. For she is probably only 4 feet and 5-8 inches high. She always wear a skirt and blouse which would look very formal. Its like a uniform for she always wear the same style of dress everyday, only with different color.

I always see Madam near the accounting office and ampitheatre (quadrangle) where she would give commands to the personnels or employees that would gladly obey. I even saw her supervise he setup of the "Belen" in the school’s open grounds. Because of that, I thought that maybe she is the head for the beautification and maintenance of the school. And that would really be a tough job. Why? Almost every term (we have a trimestral system at DLSU so we call every sem as term) we’ll see people painting walls or almost everything that can be painted so it would look new and very clean. To make this short, everything looks new and clean everyday.

These are from my notes about Madam. I would be adding more about her if I’ll find new stuffs.

Thank you for reading.

God did not create the Humans. Humans created the God

Saturday, August 20th, 2005

Before you read this, please be warned that try to hold to your faith
very tight. And one must have an open mind in order to understand its
context.

Ever wonder why there are so many gods in this world? First gods are
those of our ancestral time… Rah, sun god of the Egyptians. Plants,
trees, animals had been Gods of the pagans.

Zeus, Demeter, Hades, etc.. those Gods of the greeks which are now considered only as a part of the greek mythology.
Why did they become a myth? I dont have an answer to that either. But
what I’m trying to point is that from then until now. Through the times
of the Olympian Gods to the Hindu Gods and the Gods of almost every
religion we will find in this world, one thing is sure. The Gods did not create the Humans. It is the Humans that created the Gods.
Wonder why the Gods are so powerful and transcendental? It is because
that we humans projects someone or something that would be of great
power and divinity for us to be moral and be more responsible to our
actions. As Ludwig Fauerbach would say, "God is nothing but a projection of the human mind".
We humans, since timely memorial, have been fond of thinking that there
are gods and goddesses (for christians, there is only one GOD). That
Gods would punish us if we did something wrong. That God would send us
to hell to pay  for our mortal sins. That God would give us
everlasting life and peace if we follow his words. But does someone
right now really know that there is a heaven or hell? No one living
today could tell us and say to us that there really is a heaven or
hell. Why? Those who went there already are dead.

I believe in God, but yet I wrote this stuff. For the atheists and the
antagonists and even those who have doubts really does have a point.
For the past years of my life, I have always know that there is a God.
But where is he? How could I find him? Some people would say that
"listen to the word and God would be there", "Believe unto him and he
shall be with you" and blah… blah… blah… I watch the TV shows
that talk about this for years even they are of different religion and
beliefs. I have read books, specifically the Bible (a hundred times, a
verse a day and the whole book if I’ve got nothing to do) and even
those of the inspirational books on how god touches their lives. But
still, no answer of God’s true existence.

I even have my own argument to prove that god exist:

"Everything must have a beginning, before their beginning there must be
nothing. If there was nothing in the beginning and nothing produces
nothing therefore there should be nothing this very day. But today
there is something not nothing (something produces something). There
could not have been nothing in the beginning and that something in the
beginning is non other than GOD which is of a necessity (meaning,
unconditioned)."

But it was nulled and void by things and evidences that disproves God. I even found a site that tries to prove God.
And yet, still not strong enough. There really is no necessary
connection of things to God and even to the proof of his existence.
As Nietszche would say "Christianity was from the beginning,
essentially and fundamentally, life’s nausea and disgust with life,
merely concealed behind, masked by, dressed up as, faith in "another"
or "better" life." which is from The Birth of Tragedy, p.23, Walter Kaufmann transl. Trully, a projection of the mind.

God has been dead all this time. For he is so remote, and described to
be so perfect and divine which could only point to us and say that we
had killed God for only a dead God can trully fit perfection and
divinity. No one could ever reach him. Not even through prayers for
prayers are only self-reflection that has a subject, God.

Probably, years, decades or centuries from now, these religions and
beliefs we had today would turn out to be Myths just as what happened
to other religions and also, be a part of Humanities Literature. Or the
worst case, these beliefs would still perpetuate for another millenia.

August 19, 2005 - Sisyphus

Friday, August 19th, 2005

Many of have no idea who Sisyphus is. Let me tell you a little about him. Sisyphus is a Mythological character who was…
" in the realm of the dead, he is forced to roll a block of stone against a steep hill, which tumbles back down when he reaches the top. Then the whole process starts again, lasting all eternity. His punishment was depicted on many Greek vases. He is represented as a naked man, or wearing a fur over his shoulders, pushing a boulder." Reference

With these, Sisyphus became the most abused example of how life was so absurd. That life is pointless, meaningless and has no sense at all. Probably, this are some of the reason why Albert Camus  called Sisyphus "The Absurd Hero".

As we would think of it, isn’t it true that life is absurd? We do the same things everyday, same routine and ever repeating events. Waking up in the morning, taking a bath, going to school or work and after that, do some unwinding if one has enough time and then go home, fixin’ up and sleep. We have been doing the same thing for almost our whole life. Isn’t it amazing? I had never thought about that before either, not just until these past few weeks.

Many of us will say that we have a purpose in this earth of mankind. So what is our purpose? I know that there are religious, reflections and christian books that speak of our purpose in this reality. I even read some. But do people really escaped life’s absurdity by finding and looking for what is our purpose? Probably not. We only look for something that can temporarily erase and throw out life’s absurdity from our mind so that we may continue living the normal way. Just as it is and it was before.
You know what? life is really absurd, pointless, meaningless… thats the reason why we look for our meaning and our purpose in the first place. Do you also know what Sisyphus did to overcome this absurdity? He did not took this absurdity as a burden. Sisyphus lift himself greater than the gods for he thought that all is just well. He did not think of the punishment (absurdity) as it was supposed to be. Instead, he accepted it and became happy with it. He even think of himself as the "Best rock roller in the underworld… even… in the universe"

Who are you? Yes you?

Wednesday, August 17th, 2005

Could you tell me who you are without telling me your name?
I’m not asking for your name. I’m asking who you are?
Who are you?;
A simple question but yet none of us can answer directly. People
usually describe themselves when asked "Who are you?" but aren’t we
supposed to describe ourselves only when asked "What can you say about
yourself?".
Also, we can’t answer the question by merely telling
our name. Names are only labels. Labels for people, persons or anything
for easy identification. We are only supposed to tell our name when
asked "What is your name?" and not when asked "Who are you?". So how do
we supposed to know Who are we? or simply asking yourself "Who am I?".
Isn’t it also true that there are times that when we are asked "Who are
you?" we answer it by telling what we like, what we do, our hobbies,
and every description related to what we do and what we feel. But does
that answer the question "Who are you?"
Try doing this. Ask yourself
"Who am I?". Can you answer it directly? Isn’t it absurd? If our name
is only a label for us to be identified, our names are meaningless.
Everything we have done, we love to do, we like to feel and even we had
achieved does not comply to answering the question "Who are you?"
because we are supposed only to tell those if we are asked "What have
you done?", "What did you achieve?", "What is your feeling about a
particular thing, event or person?".

Still there is no direct answer to the question "Who are you?".

With these, come to think of it. If we cannot answer the question
"Who am I?" or "Who are you?" then what is our purpose in this absurd
life? Isn’t it absurd if we don’t know Who we are?
